How to decrypt the code.
The reading of VINs begins with the first group of signs - WMI. The first and second symbols are the designation of the country of manufacture. Moreover, the first sign indicates geographical affiliation (continent), while the second one specifically names the country. Thus, the letters A-H are assigned to the African continent, J–R to the Asian continent, and S-Z to the European continent. Cars produced in North America have the numbers 1-5 in the first place, and Australian ones - 6.7.

In some cases, two digits are involved at once to correctly read the country code. For example, German cars are designated by the combinations W0-W9.
The tritium WMI sign leads to the automaker. Companies producing up to 500 cars a year have the number 9.
VDS is the next group of characters (from 4 to 9). They talk about design features. The first sign is the body type, the second is the engine, and the third is the car model. The next three symbols out of six are information about the maximum permissible weight, the type of braking system, chassis, and other information.
VIS – the last eight characters. Here lies information about the year in which the car was released, its serial number, and the manufacturer.
This completes the decryption of the code. It remains only to notice one more characteristic feature. The Latin letters O, Q, I are never found in the sequence of characters. This is an international standard that eliminates confusion in signs due to their similarity to the Arabic numerals "1", "0".
